![]() ![]() Kinda like, when people are starting out TF2, I'd recommend they play soldier, maybe medic or demo. He seems like a solid, straightforward "learning" character. ![]() I just want SOME options at the Yeah, I get that impression about the Commando too. ok, I'm cool with rewarding players with gradual unlocks if that's your thing. I've also played BoI, Rouge Legacy, and many others for sure.So what? "It's not too hard to unlock them". I've mostly put a fair amount of hours into Nethack and DCSS, where you can play every class out of the gate. *Just to reiterate, my main problem with the class lockdown is that it restricts the multiplayer yeah, I've played. A good mix between reflex skills and planning.Īnd it's very rewarding to see such improvement, unlike the majority of mainstream games where hand holding is bloody everywhere. Most Roguelikes start out seemingly brutal in terms of difficulty (esp the complex ones like Nethack) but become much easier the more the player understands the mechanics and what is actually important. Though I will give RoR this: It definitely emulates the Roguelike learning period. Risk of Rain goes the opposite direction by putting the player on a timer, making gut reaction and rushing matter more than deliberation. This makes sense if you've actually played Rogue as Real Roguelikes are more methodical and less "ballcrushing platforming with shooting". A more fair comparison might be FTL in terms of difficulty for unlocking new characters, (though nothing will be so soulcrushing and stupidly luck-driven as unlocking the Crystal Cruiser in FTL.) Meat Boy really isn't a far comparison with anything outside of platformer ROMhacks and I Wanna Be the Guy. It's quite an odd comparison as most of these Action RPGs aren't quite roguelikes, but hybrids of other genres with roguelikes (nothing wrong with that, it's just an observation). You wouldn't complain about ROR's difficulty if you've played Super Meat Boy. One game that comes to mind with very difficult characters to unlock is Super Meat Boy. The Binding Of Isaac and most rogue likes are too easy. I have 3 characters plus the starting guy unlocked and have only played 5 hours.
