If you want to place a waypoint at every kilometer grid intersection, or create a permanent grid overlay at 1KM intervals, try the new Grid Builder tool in ExpertGPS. Or, do what I do, and use the keys to remove or add more grid lines on the fly. To get the most out of ExpertGPS, it will help to understand the basic philosophy behind the major features in ExpertGPS. You can fine-tune the display of grid lines in the Map Display Options dialog. This guide will help you get up and running with ExpertGPS and guide you through the most common uses of the software. At some scales, you’ll see a 1KM grid spacing, but as you zoom out the spacing will change to 2KM, 5KM, and 10KM to prevent the map from getting obscured by hundreds of grid lines. The interval between grid lines is automatically adjusted based on the map scale. You can convert lat/lon, UTM, and state plane coordinates to and from USNG by switching between coordinate formats in the My Coordinate Formats dialog.ĮxpertGPS displays a kilometer grid when you are viewing USNG, UTM, state plane, or MGRS coordinates. As you move the cursor over the map, the USNG coordinates for the cursor location are displayed in the lower right corner of the main ExpertGPS window. You can enter USNG coordinates in the Edit Waypoint dialog, or import them from a CSV file. Change the Location to United States, and select US National Grid, NAD83 datum. Click on the My Coordinate Formats tab, and click Add. ExpertGPS automatically determines the delimiter (comma, tab, semi-colon) used in your data file, and shows a preview of your delimited data at the bottom of the Import Text dialog. Will ExpertGPS support USNG coordinates and will it show 1Km grids overlayed onto topo maps as a user selection?ĮxpertGPS supports US National Grid (USNG) coordinates. This tutorial uses PNEZD data, but the process will be identical for any comma-separated or tab-delimited data you might have. Import the KMZ, and click Export to convert it to a shapefile.US National Grid (USNG) Map Overlays and Grid Lines I repeat the process to export the subway lines from the Track List as a Polyline Shapefile.Īfter you’ve done this once in ExpertGPS, you’ll have the coordinate format already set to match your ArcGIS project, so converting additional KMZ and KML files simply becomes a two-step process. Simply select the waypoints, routes, or tracks on the map, and click Get Elevation. When prompted to save the shapefile, I change the File Type in the bottom of the Export dialog to Point Shapefile (.shp). Now, using the Get Elevation command on the Tools menu in ExpertGPS, you can add elevation to anything. Now that the data is in ExpertGPS, individual parcels can be selected and sent to any GPS receiver, making it easy to locate the property. The image above shows the output from ExpertGPS in Illustrator: the topo map layer is on the bottom, and above that are layers showing the town boundary, all of. ExpertGPS reprojected the CAD drawing from Alaska State Plane Coordinate System, Zone 4, NAD27 (US Survey Feet) to UTM, NAD83 (Meters) so that it could be viewed over an orthophoto of the city and river. To export the subway stations, I click once in the Waypoint List, and then click Export Waypoints in List on the File menu. With the upcoming support for SVG export in ExpertGPS, you’ll be able to take any GPX file and output it as Scalable Vector Graphics, which you can then import right into Illustrator. ExpertGPS: GPS Mapping Software with Aerial Photos and USGS Topo Maps. ![]() New York City is covered by the New York Long Island state plane coordinate system, NAD83 datum, which I’ve selected in ExpertGPS Pro. ExpertGPS Pro supports lat/lon, UTM, US state plane coordinates, and the national grid formats of Britain, France, and many other countries. A Quick Start Guide to ExpertGPS Thanks for choosing ExpertGPS. ExpertGPS Pro converts the placemarks for each subway station into GPS waypoints, and converts each subway line into a GPS track.īefore I export the data, I have to decide what coordinate format to use to match my ArcGIS project. First I import the KMZ data into ExpertGPS Pro by clicking Import on the File menu, and selecting the KMZ file I downloaded from the Internet. For this example, I’ll convert the New York City subway lines and stations in KMZ format to SHP using ExpertGPS Pro. One convenient use for ExpertGPS Pro is as a converter from Google Earth’s KML and compressed KMZ formats into GIS shapefiles, DXF CAD drawings, and other GPS and mapping formats. Can the programme convert a kmz file from Google Earth to a shp file to use in GIS? ![]() I am looking at your programme ExpertGPS.
